In 1952, Branemark revolutionized dentistry when he discovered at his laboratory in Sweden that titanium integratres with bone. He called the process "osseointegration"

Modern – day dental implantology was invented in 1965 when Branemark treated Gosta Larsson, a patient who was missing teeth due to severe chin and jaw deformities. Larsson was the first person in the world to receive titanium dental implants.

In 1978, the Swedish health authorties approved the insertion of implants for clinical purposes.

In 1982, Branemark presented his scientific data at the Toronto Conference on Osseointegration in Clinical Dentistry, which proved to be turning point of the treatment’s acceptance.

In the same year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of titanium dental implants in the United States.
